Breast Cancer Resources for Surgical Oncology

As part of a multifaceted knowledge translation strategy, these educational tools help Ontario hospitals implement Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB) for breast cancer patients.

Clinical Practice Guidelines

The sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) guideline is the first to recommend SLNB as the preferred method of axillary staging for early stage breast cancer patients in Ontario.

Catching up: Updates in SLNB

The 2010 Update in Surgical Oncology highlighted Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB) in breast cancer. Two of the presentations with audio are available. Keeping healthcare professionals’ knowledge current is important to maintaining high-quality patient care.

Cancer Care Ontario offered forums for surgeons and pathologists to gain a broader understanding of SLNB. Powerpoint presentations with audio of different SLNB clinical perspectives are provided here:

Educational Tools

A tool to help patients and providers decide if breast reconstruction surgery is the right choice. This tool has been drafted from a patient perspective addressing the recommendations from the guideline, Breast cancer reconstruction surgery (immediate and delayed) across Ontario: Patient indications and appropriate surgical options. Please feel free to use as part of your institution’s breast reconstruction patient education program.

Pathology Assessment Tips for SLNB

The 2010 Pathology Update included a Breast: SLNB Pathology Refresher Course, hosted by CCO, as a means to disseminate the most current information surrounding SLN pathology. A presentation with audio covering the technical aspects of SLN Pathology is available:

Information to consider to improve the availability of SLNB at your hospital and address common barriers to SLNB, including nuclear medicine.

Breast Cancer: SLNB List Serv Discussion Summary

Use these discussion summaries to facilitate education on quality issues related to the guideline, Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in Early-stage Breast Cancer . The summaries are key points taken from the SLNB List Serv, a multidisciplinary online discussion platform for physicians to improve their knowledge of and technique for Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy.
