Thoracic Cancer Surgery Centres

Overview:

Designated centres are hospitals that meet certain safety and quality standards for a particular procedure or type of care.
Thoracic Cancer Surgery Standards
  • Over 90% of thoracic cancer surgeries in Ontario take place at designated thoracic centres.
  • Ontario has 15 designated thoracic centres.
  • Overall, the number (volume) of these complex surgeries has been increasing while the number of deaths after surgery (post-operative mortality) has been decreasing.

What is Thoracic Surgery?

  • Thoracic surgery is used to treat lung and esophageal cancers. It includes surgery to remove the whole lung (pneumonectomy) or a diseased portion of the lung (lobectomy) , as well as surgery to remove some or all of the esophagus (esophagectomy) .

How is this important to patient care in Ontario?

  • Access to care close to home is important for patients, but this must be balanced by the need for high-quality and expert care.
  • Thoracic surgery is highly complex. Successful outcomes such as fewer deaths and complications (post-surgical mortality and morbidity) are linked to the number of surgeries performed and to surgical training and hospital resources.
