Training to Become a Nurse Endoscopist

Training is available through Cancer Care Ontario for registered nurses to become independent nurse endoscopists. The Registered Nurse Flexible Sigmoidoscopy curriculum has three phases:

  • Observational phase: Registered nurses observe physician trainers perform 25 flexible sigmoidoscopy procedures.
  • Didactic and simulation training phase: One-week session including education and technical skill development using simulators and a simulated patient experience.
  • Certification phase: Registered nurses perform 25 partial procedures (endoscope withdrawals) and 50 full procedures (insertion and withdrawal) under the supervision of a physician trainer, followed by in-person evaluation by 2 assessors who will visit the site.
