Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Data Submission Portal

What is the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Data Submission Portal?

It is a data collection portal designed to be used by Ontario hospitals to submit colonoscopy data.

The portal replaces the Colonoscopy Interim Reporting Tool.

What is the purpose and expected benefits of the portal?

The purpose of the portal is to provide a primary source of data on the quality of colonoscopies across Ontario. In the future this is expected to expand and cover all gastrointestinal procedures, not just colonoscopies.

The portal is secure and checks that the files which are being submitted are valid, both in format and content.

ColonCancerCheck, the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Quality-Based Procedures and the Colonoscopy Quality Management Program use the information to achieve their individual goals, and the portal will allow them to expand their scope to include all hospitals across Ontario.

The flexibility of the portal will also enable us to make the changes in data reporting which are necessary as we transition the primary screening test for colorectal cancer from the guaiac fecal occult blood test to the fecal immunochemical test.

Which hospitals need to use the portal?

All hospitals performing colonoscopies must participate by submitting data to the portal.

What type of data does the portal collect?

The portal contains information such as:

  • Facility identifiers
  • Patient identifiers
  • Procedure rationale
  • Interventions performed

How are you using the data?

We use the data to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of colonoscopy procedures performed in Ontario.

Colonoscopy data from the portal and other healthcare databases generates reports including:

  • Screening Activity Report
  • Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Quality-Based Procedures reports
  • Colonoscopy Quality Management Program reports
  • Cancer System Quality Index
  • Ontario Cancer Screening Performance Report
  • Monthly ColonCancerCheck reports

How will the privacy of my patients be protected?

We have extensive measures put in place to protect the privacy and integrity of information during data transfer, storage and use. Detailed information about these measures and policies is available on the Privacy and Privacy - Frequently Asked Questions pages.
