Specialists

Specialists, including gastroenterologists and general surgeons are responsible for:

  • Testing: Delivering colonoscopies to those at increased risk and those with a positive FOBT
  • Support: Supporting the implementation of a streamlined referral process at your hospitals and Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) and ensuring that clinical guidelines and quality standards for colonoscopies and other tests are met consistently
  • Reporting: If you are performing colonoscopies in support of the program you will also be responsible for collecting and reporting data

Standards and Guidelines

To help ensure consistent quality across the province, Cancer Care Ontario developed comprehensive Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) and colonoscopy standards through its Program in Evidence-Based Care (PEBC). In addition, ColonCancerCheck has adopted existing evidence-based guidelines for colonoscopy surveillance, following polypectomy. Endoscopists play a leadership role in ensuring that ColonCancerCheck’s clinical guidelines and quality standards for colonoscopies are met.

Reporting

All Ontario hospitals currently performing colonoscopies are responsible for collecting and reporting data on all colonoscopies performed in their facilities. We have developed the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Data Submission Portal to support the submission of colonoscopy data.

Detailed information about the portal is available on the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Data Submission Portal page.
