Cancer Care Overview
Cancer Care Overview

The goal of cancer control is to reduce the number of people diagnosed with cancer and to ensure that patients receive high quality care at every step in their care. That means we have to attend to the entire disease pathway for each cancer beginning with prevention through to palliative care.

The Ontario Cancer Plan 2015-2019 has six goals that span the entire disease:

  1. Quality of life and patient experience: Ensure the delivery of responsive and respectful care, optimizing individuals’ quality of life across the cancer care continuum
  2. Safety: Ensure the safety of patients and caregivers in all care settings
  3. Equity: Ensure health equity for all Ontarians across the cancer system
  4. Integrated care: Ensure the delivery of integrated care across the cancer care continuum
  5. Sustainability: Ensure a sustainable cancer system for future generations
  6. Effectiveness: Ensure the provision of effective cancer care based on best evidence

Our Programs are also organized to attend to the different phases of cancer.

We are taking an approach to planning and quality improvement called Disease Pathway Management. This approach looks at the cancer system's performance across the cancer journey – from prevention to recovery and end-of-life care – for different types of cancers.
