CCO SEER*Stat Package

What is SEER*Stat?

SEER*Stat is a free statistical software created by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the United States. The software is designed to analyze the NCI's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) data but can also be used to analyze data from other cancer registries that have been prepared to comply with the software. Statistics produced by SEER*Stat are useful for: (1) cancer prevention and control; (2) understanding health disparities; (3) prioritizing cancer control efforts; and (4) monitoring progress, for the purpose of reducing the burden of cancer. To learn more about the SEER*Stat software, please see the US National Cancer Institute’s SEER*Stat Software website.

What is the CCO SEER*Stat Package?

The CCO SEER*Stat package contains de-identified Ontario cancer research data files derived from the Ontario Cancer Registry. This allows analysts to produce incidence and mortality statistics for studying the impact of cancer on the Ontario population. The package also includes a downloadable version of the SEER*Stat software and supporting user materials.

Details of the databases available in the Ontario cancer research data files are provided below for the most recent years of data. The research data files contain incidence and mortality data for the following levels of geography: Ontario, Census Divisions, Public Health Units, and Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs). To facilitate comparisons with data from earlier releases, all previously included reference populations (for calculating age-standardized rates) are provided with each new release of the CCO SEER*Stat package.

Important Information about the Most Recent Release (Release 10, November 2015 )

  • The Ontario cancer research data files contain incidence and mortality data, from the years 1981-2012, for the following levels of geography: Ontario, Census Divisions, Public Health Units, and Local Health Integration Networks
  • Beginning with 2010 diagnoses, the Ontario Cancer Registry adopted the SEER Multiple Primary and Histology Coding Rules for counting additional primary cancers. As a result, there is an increase in the number of new cases compared to pre-2010 incidence counts. This change in number is due to how cancers are being counted; it does not mean that more people in Ontario are being diagnosed with cancer— visit the Ontario Cancer Registry ‘Frequently Asked Questions & Answers’ section for more information
  • In order to align with Statistics Canada's update of the standard reference population (from 1991 to 2011) for age-standardization, CCO is offering data users the 2011 population as an option (among others) in this release
  • Since its release in November 2015, an issue was identified with the mortality data files in Release 10. This issue resulted in a greater than expected number of cancer cases with unknown residence at death. The issue was corrected, with the majority of deaths allocated to the following Public Health Units: Halton Region, Thunder Bay, and Peel Region. Release 10 with corrected mortality data was re-released in March 2017.
