Sarcoma Management

What is Sarcoma?

Sarcomas are cancers that arise in soft tissue and bone. They can affect all age groups, may arise in any part of the body and are rare. Treatment may differ between sarcoma patients. Often, treatment is quite complex and even with treatment an individual’s condition can worsen or even become fatal.

Sarcoma management aims to cure the disease and to maintain the function of the organs and limbs involved or near to the cancer.

Sarcoma Services in Ontario

Cancer Care Ontario brought together an Expert Panel of physicians, nurses and hospital administrators in 2009. The objective of the panel’s work was to help Ontario make the best use of resources while providing the best possible sarcoma care to patients. Together, the panel developed recommendations for the organization of the management of adult sarcoma patients in Ontario.

Developing a New Plan

Regional Cancer Programs across the province worked together to develop multidisciplinary programs focused on ensuring equitable access to high-quality sarcoma care for all Ontarians. Host Sarcoma Services Provider Sites, Partner Sarcoma Services Provider Sites and partner regions were identified. Under the guidance of the Sarcoma Services Steering Committee, a Provincial Sarcoma Services Plan was put into place with three regional programs — led by Toronto, Hamilton and Ottawa — and defined service delivery expectations.

What We are Doing

  • We will be working together with the Sarcoma Services Steering Committee and the regions to support the transition to a more organized, integrated multidisciplinary model of adult sarcoma care across the province.
  • We are working to build performance measures and quality metrics that will measure the success of this program.
  • We continue to work with a range of healthcare providers, patients and sarcoma experts to leverage the existing expertise and capacity within the system to provide timely, equitable access to high-quality sarcoma services for all Ontario sarcoma patients.

Soft Tissue Sarcoma Diagnosis Pathway

The Soft Tissue Sarcoma Diagnosis Pathway was developed collaboratively by a Working Group of regional and clinical representatives, through an evidence-based approach facilitated by Cancer Care Ontario and the Sarcoma Services Steering Committee. The purpose of the Pathway is to provide guidance to healthcare providers on appropriate clinical work-up and referral of suspected cases of sarcoma across Ontario. Use of this Pathway across the province will ensure patients with suspected cases of soft tissue sarcoma have timely access to high-quality care provided by a multidisciplinary sarcoma team, tailored to their individual needs.

List of Sarcomas and Diagnosis requiring Sarcoma Expertise

The List of Sarcomas and Diagnosis requiring Sarcoma Expertise was put together by the Sarcoma Program to account for morphology codes and descriptions that require the expertise from a clinician with a specialty or special interest in sarcoma. The list will help:

  • Clinicians identify sarcoma and sarcoma-like conditions;
  • System planning (incidence and treatment volumes); and
  • Quality measurement and performance management.
