Surgical and Diagnostic Wait Times Reporting

Ontario’s surgical and diagnostic wait times information is reported on the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHTLC) website. This public reporting is an important step toward increasing the transparency and accountability for the healthcare system.

The data on the MOHLTC website are supplied and verified by individual hospitals as part of their wait times funding agreements. The hospitals submit their data electronically directly to the Wait Times Information Office, Cancer Care Ontario or the Cardiac Care Network. The information is then compiled by CCO’s Wait Times Information Office for reporting on the MOHLTC website. The WTIO strives to use the most current and accurate information available on wait times in Ontario.

What is being measured?

For surgical procedures, Ontario measures the wait time from when a patient and surgeon decide to proceed with surgery to when the actual procedure is completed. For diagnostic scans (MRI and CT), Ontario measures the wait time from when a diagnostic scan is ordered to when the actual exam is completed. This interval of time is typically referred to as "decision to treat" to "treatment."
